Tokyo, Sept. 19 (Jiji Press)–The average price of rice sold at some 1,000 supermarkets across Japan in the week through Sunday rose by 120 yen from the previous week to 4,275 yen per 5 kilograms, nearing the record high of 4,285 yen marked in mid-May, the agriculture ministry said Friday. The price rose for the third consecutive week as rice harvested this year was sold at high prices amid a decline in the sales volume of cheaper government-stockpiled rice. The amount of stockpiled rice sold under discretionary contracts stood at 4,250 tons, sharply down from a peak of over 10,000 tons. Sales of brand rice, including newly harvested rice, accounted for 78 pct of total rice sales, with its average price inching up 9 yen to 4,353 yen. “Although the average rice price has returned to a level similar to its peak, it cannot be said that it will continue to rise,” agriculture minister Shinjiro Koizumi said Tuesday.
