(Adnkronos) – Alarm in Hong Kong, where about 6,000 people will be evacuated after the discovery of a bomb dating back to the Second World War at a construction site in the Quarry Bay district. The device, 1.5 meters long and weighing about 450 kilos, was deemed “fully functional” by the police, who activated an emergency plan. The evacuation operations, which concern 18 residential buildings, will begin this evening, while the reclamation is scheduled for tomorrow morning.
“Due to the extremely high risks in dismantling and disposing of the bomb, we must start the evacuation plan,” said District Commander Andy Chan. It is not the first time that Hong Kong has dealt with unexploded ordnance: in 2018 a similar bomb was found in Wan Chai, forcing the evacuation of 1,200 residents and requiring over 20 hours to secure. War remnants still surface today, almost a century after the fierce fighting that marked the city during the Japanese occupation.
