Germany, EU ok to state aid for biomass and biogas of 7.9 billion

18 Settembre 2025

(Adnkronos) – Green light from the European Commission for a December 2022 amendment to the German state aid scheme for renewable energy, which will increase state support for the biomass and biogas sectors by 7.9 billion euros. The EU executive announces this in a statement, highlighting that it has concluded that the amendment is “necessary and appropriate to increase the production of electricity from biomass and biogas” and that the state aid scheme “remains proportionate, as the aid will be limited to the minimum necessary to provide an incentive” to increase energy generation from these sources, “even in periods of high electricity prices, while it will have a limited impact on competition and trade in the EU”.

The German amendment will increase the volume of tenders, introduce a dedicated quota for biomass plants with an existing connection to a district heating network and limit the hours of biogas electricity production eligible for support, the Commission explains. The measure will also reduce the time for old plants to switch to the new biomass support and increase the payment for flexible electricity production.
