Denmark, ‘paradigm shift’, towards first purchase of long-range precision weapons

17 Settembre 2025

(Adnkronos) – Denmark, a NATO country, intends to acquire long-range precision weapons for the first time as a deterrent against Russia. The announcement came from Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen, Defense Minister Troels Lund Poulsen and Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen. But there are no details, not even on the timing.

Frederiksen spoke of a “paradigm shift in defense policy” for Denmark. The goal, she said, is to ensure credible deterrence against possible attacks on Denmark and NATO as a whole. The prime minister stressed that intelligence assessments do not indicate immediate risks of a possible military attack against Denmark, even if Russia represents a threat.

As the conflict triggered by the full-scale Russian invasion of Ukraine, launched on February 24 three years ago, continues, Denmark is strengthening its defense capabilities. Now the precision weapons sector will be evaluated. According to Lund, missiles or drones capable of reaching targets in ‘enemy’ territory, such as missile launch sites, could be contemplated.
