(Adnkronos) – The day of the conviction to 27 years in prison of former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro turned into “a day of celebration” in Brasilia, where many took to the streets of the capital to celebrate what they called “a victory” saying that “justice has been done”. A group of students loaded a giant inflatable doll of the former Brazilian president onto a tow truck and in addition to slogans against Bolsonaro they also chanted slogans against US President Donald Trump.
“Bolsonaro’s conviction is extremely important and a victory,” said activist Leticia Holanda. “Bolsonaro in prison!” shouted customers at the Pardim bar, a well-known leftist hangout in a residential neighborhood of the Brazilian capital. “I burst into tears. It’s a very important moment that we’ve been waiting for a long time,” said a 20-year-old student.
The atmosphere was different near the former president’s house in Brasilia, where he is under house arrest. Dozens of supporters gathered for a prayer vigil, with Brazilian, US or Israeli flags. “President Bolsonaro, we love you!” shouted Rita dos Passos, 59, into a microphone positioned on the roof of a truck. Brazil’s Supreme Court sentenced Bolsonaro to 27 years in prison for a coup plot at the end of a historic trial that divided the nation. Bolsonaro’s defense team has announced that it will appeal.
