Latvia, airspace on border with Russia and Belarus closes for a week

11 Settembre 2025

(Adnkronos) – Latvian authorities have announced the closure of their airspace on the eastern border with Russia and Belarus for a week, following rising tensions due to the intrusion of Russian drones into Poland. “Following developments analyzed by the Latvian army, we are closing the Latvian airspace zone on the eastern border with Belarus and Russia,” said Latvian Defense Minister Andris Spruds, in a message on X, where he indicated that the measure will remain in effect until September 18.

“There is no immediate threat, but the army is on high alert during national defense exercises,” Spruds stressed, adding that this measure “will allow total control of the reserved airspace area and facilitate the detection of unauthorized flying objects.” He also pointed out that the decision also allows “clearing the reserved airspace zone for NATO Baltic Air Policing Mission fighters and air defense forces” and will allow “increasing acoustic surveillance system tests, drone simulations, and the deployment and training of additional mobile combat units.”
