New Zealand, on the run with his children for 4 years, man killed by police

8 Settembre 2025

(Adnkronos) – For almost four years he remained hidden with his three children in the Waikato forest in New Zealand, but today Tom Phillips was killed in a shootout with police that put an end to his hiding. The police made it known. After a dispute with his wife over custody of the children, Phillips had fled at Christmas 2021 along with Ember, who is now 9, Maverick who is 10 and Jayda who is 12. New Zealand police explained that, after being alerted to a shop burglary in Piopio, they chased two suspects aboard a quad before being hit by one of them with a rifle. The officers returned fire, killing the attacker, identified as Phillips. A few hours later, authorities found the man’s three children in the forest. In June 2024, police had promised a reward of $80,000 for anyone with information on Phillips and his three children.

“I can confirm that the children are well and unharmed and will undergo medical checks tonight,” said Deputy Police Commissioner Jill Rogers, explaining that Phillips’ children were found at a campsite. Prime Minister Christopher Luxon spoke of “sad and tragic” events. Speaking to broadcaster Rnz, the children’s mother, Cat, said she was relieved the ordeal was over but “saddened by how events unfolded.” “Our hope has always been that the children could be returned peacefully and safely for everyone involved,” she said.
