Georgia, ‘freezing of NGO accounts is an assault on fundamental rights’

8 Settembre 2025

(Adnkronos) – “Last week, the Georgian authorities took another step against democracy in the country by freezing the bank accounts of independent civil society organizations. This is another assault on fundamental rights” and a “repressive use of the judicial system. The EU urges the Georgian authorities to immediately reverse this decision”. This was stated by a spokesperson for the EU Commission during the daily press briefing.

Meanwhile, the EU executive is “still evaluating” the Georgian authorities’ letter of response to the recommendations raised by the Commission regarding civil rights and freedoms in the country, which is experiencing an authoritarian squeeze at the hands of the ruling Georgian Dream party. Brussels expects Georgian leaders to “take concrete steps” to address the issues raised, the spokesperson recalls.
