(Adnkronos) – The Portuguese prosecutor’s office has opened an investigation into the accident involving the Lisbon funicular that killed 15 people and injured 18 others. This was reported by the Portuguese news agency Lusa. “As usual in this type of situation and as required by law, the Prosecutor’s Office has opened an investigation,” a note released by the Attorney General’s office reads.
The Portuguese Public Prosecutor’s Office, the note continues, “is carrying out the necessary procedures, within the scope of its powers, in particular in order to preserve the evidence, with the guidance and in coordination with the police agencies.” The police, the national transport safety authority and the company that manages the ‘Gloria’ funicular are also investigating.
Meanwhile, Carris, Lisbon’s urban transport company, has stated that it has complied with all safety measures at the Elevador da Gloria. In a note, Carris specified that, in particular, “all protocols have been carried out and complied with”, both the general maintenance protocol, which is checked every four years and was last carried out in 2022, and the intermittent repair protocol, which is checked every two years and was carried out in 2024. The company also stressed that “the monthly and weekly maintenance programs and the daily inspection have been scrupulously followed”.
The company said it had “immediately” launched an investigation with the authorities to determine the cause of the accident. Inaugurated in 1885, the funicular connects Praça dos Restauradores with Bairro Alto, in the heart of Lisbon’s tourist district.
