(Adnkronos) – Brazil’s Supreme Court has begun deliberations for the verdict in the trial of former President Jair Bolsonaro, who is accused of plotting a coup to try to maintain power after losing the 2022 election. Judge Cristiano Zanin opened the session in the capital, which Bolsonaro is not required to attend.
The former Brazilian president enjoys the support of US President Donald Trump, who has accused Brazilian authorities of conducting a “witch hunt” and used the accusation as the main motivation for imposing 50% tariffs on a multitude of imports from Brazil. Trump has also sanctioned Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes, who is overseeing Bolsonaro’s trial, and has revoked the visas of most of his colleagues.
