(Adnkronos) – Europe is evaluating the possibility of supporting a 40-kilometer buffer zone as part of efforts to end Russia’s war against Ukraine. Politico writes this, citing five European diplomats. The buffer zone is being considered by European leaders as an option for a ceasefire or a post-war agreement between Ukrainian and Russian forces, but Washington is not involved in the discussions, the five anonymous diplomats said.
“Everyone is trying to act as quickly as possible on security guarantees, so that Trump doesn’t change his mind,” said one of the European officials. The proposal would likely be linked to territorial concessions by Ukraine and it is unclear whether Kyiv is open to the plan, the diplomats added. According to two officials, French and British troops are expected to make up the majority of the peacekeeping force, while the UK and France are pressing other allies to provide military equipment.
According to Politico, a minimum of 4,000 to a maximum of 60,000 peacekeepers could be deployed in Ukraine to guarantee a potential peace agreement, while Kiev’s allies postpone making public commitments until key details emerge.
