(Adnkronos) – Sweden and the Netherlands have urged the European Union to adopt sanctions against Israel and Hamas for the war in Gaza, including the suspension of the EU-Israel trade agreement. In the letter, Swedish Foreign Minister Maria Malmer Stenergard and Dutch Defense Minister Ruben Brekelmans asked the EU’s foreign service to “submit further proposals on how to increase pressure on Hamas”. In the document addressed to the High Representative for Foreign Affairs of the European Union, Kaja Kallas, the foreign ministers also called for targeted sanctions against Israeli government ministers.
“There is a need to quickly introduce targeted sanctions against extremist Israeli ministers who promote illegal settlement activities and actively oppose a negotiated two-state solution, and the need for further sanctions against violent settlers,” the document reads.
