(Adnkronos) – Germany, France and Great Britain – in a letter delivered to the United Nations Security Council – have communicated the activation of the “snapback”, the mechanism for restoring international sanctions against Iran for its nuclear program.
In the statement, the three countries explained that they have decided to proceed now to avoid losing, in mid-October, the possibility of reintroducing the sanctions envisaged by the 2015 nuclear agreement, from which the United States withdrew in 2018 under the Trump presidency. After several rounds of negotiations with Tehran, including those in Geneva last Tuesday, the E3 considered that Iran had not offered “sufficiently concrete commitments” to suspend the mechanism. The ministers of Germany, France and Great Britain informed US Secretary of State Marco Rubio of their decision yesterday. Tehran has warned that a reintroduction of sanctions will receive a “harsh response”.
