Vietnam: Typhoon Kajiki approaches the coast, over 325,000 people evacuated

25 Agosto 2025

(Adnkronos) – Tens of thousands of people have been evacuated from Vietnam’s coastal provinces as Typhoon Kajiki approaches land, bringing winds that could reach 160 km/h. According to authorities, over 325,500 residents have been moved to temporary shelters in schools and public buildings, while about 16,000 military personnel have been mobilized for rescue operations. The coastal city of Vinh has already been flooded, with shops and restaurants closed and residents busy protecting their homes with sandbags. Two domestic airports have been closed and all fishing boats have been called back to port.

The Vietnam National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting predicts that the typhoon will make landfall around 1 p.m. local time with winds up to 157 km/h (8 a.m. Italian time), and then gradually lose intensity. Meanwhile, over a dozen domestic flights have been canceled and, on the Chinese island of Hainan, about 20,000 people have been evacuated. In the first seven months of 2025, natural disasters have already caused over 100 deaths or missing persons in Vietnam and damage estimated at $21 million, while in September 2024 Typhoon Yagi caused losses of $3.3 billion and hundreds of deaths.
