(Adnkronos) – Several international postal services, including Royal Mail, DHL and PostNord, have announced the temporary suspension of deliveries to the United States due to the new import tariff rules that will come into effect from August 29. The decision follows the executive order signed by President Donald Trump last month, which ends the global exemption from customs duties for low-value packages. Until now, an exemption of up to 800 dollars was foreseen, but the new regulation will apply the same tariff rates foreseen for the goods of each country of origin. Only gifts up to 100 dollars will remain exempt.
Royal Mail has informed that it will suspend its current export services to the United States, but aims to restore them “within two days” with updated systems. DHL also announced the suspension of deliveries for business customers through DHL Parcel Germany, explaining that “key issues remain unresolved” on how and by whom the new tariffs will be paid, while specifying that DHL Express services will remain operational. PostNord, on the other hand, justified the suspension with the delays by the US authorities in providing the technical details necessary for the adaptation: “An unpleasant but necessary decision to ensure full compliance with the new rules,” said communications manager Bjorn Bergman.
According to the White House, the elimination of the exemption aims to counter “deceptive shipping practices, illegal material and duty evasion,” claiming that some operators have abused the old rules to send illicit substances to the US. The Trump administration also reported that duty-free shipments have more than doubled, from 115 million in 2023/24 to 309 million by June 2025. The executive order anticipates the application of the measure by two years, initially scheduled for July 1, 2027.
