Belarus: government evaluates ‘modernizing’ its missiles with nuclear warheads

21 Agosto 2025

(Adnkronos) – Belarus is evaluating the best way to increase its national missile production, including the possibility of equipping its ‘Polonez’ missile systems with nuclear warheads. This was stated by Alexander Volfovich, head of the State Security Council. “It is a state-of-the-art system,” Volfovich said, referring to the ‘Polonez’ missile system, as reported by the state news agency Belta. “But any weapon requires adaptations and upgrades and we are evaluating equipping these missiles with nuclear warheads,” the senior security official said.

Alexander Lukashenko, president of Belarus since 1994, also said that Minsk must modernize and develop its missile production: “The dynamics of military threats and the significant increase in military spending by our Western neighbors force us to constantly and with the utmost attention pay attention to the issue of the defense capabilities of Belarus, Russia and our Union,” Lukashenko said, quoted by state media. Belarus, a close ally of Russia, does not possess its own nuclear weapons, but hosts Russia’s tactical ones, which remain under Moscow’s control.
