(Adnkronos) – In Israel, the Higher Planning Commission of the Civil Administration, a department of the Ministry of Defense, has given the green light to the controversial project in the West Bank that envisages the construction of about 3,400 housing units in the area known as E1, between East Jerusalem and the Maale Adumim settlement. This was announced by the Israeli organization Peace Now, which had a representative present.
The area, about 12 square kilometers, is considered one of the most sensitive and building here would effectively divide the West Bank, making it more difficult – if not impossible – for a Palestinian state to be born on a connected territory.
Last week, speaking on the project, Israeli Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich spoke of “burying the idea of a Palestinian state”.
