(Adnkronos) – To get a teaching position in Oklahoma, those arriving from New York and California, quintessential Democratic states, must demonstrate their adherence to the principles of America First with a 50-question test. The goal, explained the state’s superintendent of education, Ryan Walters, is to check that they are not bearers of “woke ideology” with liberal positions on issues related to government, religion, and gender.
“We don’t want woke indoctrinators in our classrooms, this is an America First approach,” Walters told the Washington Post, explaining that the test was created by Prager University, an association that provides schools with material that emphasizes patriotic and conservative values. The reaction of the teachers’ unions was immediate, saying that this political stunt will end up discouraging qualified people from applying to teach in Oklahoma, where there is a shortage of teachers.
This is not the first controversial, and strongly ideological, initiative by Walters, who has distributed Bibles in all the state’s schools and supported the proposal to teach high school students that there were “discrepancies” in the results of the 2020 elections, in which Donald Trump was defeated by Joe Biden.
