(Adnkronos) – An unprecedented second round will decide who will be the next president of Bolivia after almost 20 years of government by the left-wing Movement for Socialism (Mas). Surprisingly, center-right senator Rodrigo Paz Pereira is in the lead with over 30% of the votes, after the elections held yesterday in Bolivia where more than 7.9 million voters were called to the polls. This is what emerges from the not yet definitive results with the count almost at 92%.
According to the Supreme Electoral Tribunal, Rodrigo Paz Pereira, candidate of the Christian Democratic Party, obtained about 32% of the votes and will face former right-wing president Jorge ‘Tuto’ Quiroga, candidate of Alianza Libre, in the second round, who won almost 27% of the votes cast.
Entrepreneur Samuel Doria Medina, candidate of Alianza Unidad, who obtained just over 20% of the preferences, announced that he will support Paz Pereira in the second round scheduled for October 19. Andrónico Rodríguez of Alianza Popular, Evo Morales’ former dolphin who had invited Bolivians to cancel the ballot, stopped at 8%. And Eduardo del Castillo, a former minister supported by President Luis Arce, stopped at 3%.
