(Adnkronos) – National Guard troops have begun deploying in Washington, following Donald Trump’s order as part of his plan to counter what he calls “rampant” crime in the capital. An Army spokesman, Colonel Dave Butler, told Abcnews that the troops will be tasked with providing logistical support to local law enforcement, while ensuring a visible presence in the National Mall area, the institutional and monumental heart of the American capital.
“This is part of our mission, to be present in front of national monuments,” he added. The deployment of military forces within the domestic territory in the United States is possible only if the president invokes an extraordinary emergency situation, but their functions are limited to the protection of federal property and personnel unless the president declares a state of insurrection.
