(Adnkronos) – Germany commemorates today the start of the construction of the Berlin Wall, 64 years ago. The mayor of the German capital, the Christian Democrat Kai Wegner, laid a wreath this morning at the Memorial of the 155-kilometer long and 3.6-meter high barrier that surrounded West Berlin and divided the city in two for 28 years, from August 13, 1961 until November 9, 1989, the day the East German government decreed the reopening of the borders with the Federal Republic.
