Ukraine: EU spokesperson replies to Orban, ‘without unity we help Russia’

12 Agosto 2025

(Adnkronos) – “If we don’t have unity, there will be only one actor to benefit, and that is Russia”. This was stated by the spokesperson for Foreign Affairs of the European Union, Anitta Hipper, commenting in Brussels on Hungary’s choice not to sign the declaration of European leaders on the principles for negotiating peace in Ukraine.

The spokesperson recalled that “it is not new that we need unity to be strong”, underlining how, despite the differences, the 27 unanimously approved 18 sanctions packages against Moscow. 26 EU leaders, without Hungary’s signature, supported US President Donald Trump’s peace proposal, reiterating that “it is the Ukrainians who have the right to choose their own destiny” and that any agreement must respect “independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity”.

Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, left out of the declaration, warned of the risk of “giving instructions from the bench” in view of the summit in Alaska, calling instead for a direct meeting with the Russian president and taking the meeting promoted by the White House as an “example”.
