(Adnkronos) – Italy on Friday called for “freedom of the press and information” after late Ukrainian journalist Victoria Roshchyna was laid to rest in Kiev. The 27-year-old reporter died in prison in Russia after she went missing in the occupied part of Ukraine’s southeastern Zaporizhzhia region in August 2023.
“Funeral of journalist Victoria #Roshchyna, imprisoned while reporting in Ukrainian territories occupied by Moscow, died in a Russian prison,” the Italian embassy wrote on X, posting photos of Roshchyna’s funeral.
“Freedom of the press and information is the foundation of a freer and fairer society,” the post underlined.
Ukrainian prosecutors allege that brutal torture and psychological abuse led to Roshchyna’s death, which Russian authorities said occurred on 19 September last year. Ukraine recovered Roshchyna’s reportedly mutilated body in February.
