(Adnkronos) – German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has announced a suspension of exports to Israel of military equipment that could be used in the Gaza Strip. The decision comes after the announcement of the expansion of the operation in the Palestinian enclave, decided by the Israeli security cabinet.
“The even harsher military action by the Israeli army in the Gaza Strip, approved last night by the Israeli government, makes it increasingly difficult, from the German government’s point of view, to see how the objectives can be achieved,” Chancellor Friedrich Merz (CDU) said in the statement. “The German government remains deeply concerned about the ongoing suffering of the civilian population in the Gaza Strip.”
After “the right steps taken in recent days”, Israel must continue to fully and sustainably improve the humanitarian situation in Gaza, Merz demanded, adding that no further action should be taken towards annexation of the West Bank.
