(Adnkronos) – The new right-wing Polish president, Karol Nawrocki, was sworn in at the National Assembly and immediately issued an anti-immigration and anti-euro statement. “No to illegal immigration, yes to the zloty, no to the euro,” Nawrocki said in his inaugural address, reiterating: “I will be the voice of citizens who want sovereignty and security.”
The 42-year-old president, who ran as an independent, won the runoff election in early June by a small margin over the liberal mayor of Warsaw, Rafań Trzaskowski. Poland has not yet adopted the euro and the nationalist conservative opposition party (Pis), which supported Nawrocki, opposes its adoption. In addition to being a Eurosceptic, Nawrocki is also a big supporter of US President Donald Trump, and is expected to try to bring about major policy changes in Poland.
Nawrocki’s victory marked a significant political defeat for the pro-European government of Prime Minister Donald Tusk. The new Polish president succeeds Andrzej Duda.
