(Adnkronos) – Italy’s government is striving for the release from Venezuela of jailed aid worker Alberto Trentini and other political prisoners, foreign minister Antonio Tajani underlined on Tuesday.
“We are working to free political prisoners. We sent an envoy who was also welcomed by the family, but it is up to the Venezuelan government to decide whether to hold a meeting or not,” Tajani told reporters.
“We are trying to do everything possible, but it’s not that simple.”
Trentini, 45, has been detained in Venezuela on charges of ‘conspiracy’ since 15 November 2024. Trentini’s mother has called on the cabinet to take action after learning of the reportedly dire conditions in which he is being held in a Caracas jail.
