(Adnkronos) – A 76-year-old man has been taken into custody in Leicestershire, in the south of the United Kingdom, on charges of administering poison to children at a summer camp. The BBC reports this, citing local police, according to whom the alarm was raised with the hospitalization of eight children attending the Stathern Lodge summer camp. The arrested man was detained on charges of administering poison or noxious substances with intent to injure, offend or harm. He remains in custody.

The Independent Office for Police Conduct has confirmed that it is investigating Leicestershire Police’s handling of the incident. Police said that once emergency services arrived, a triage center was set up at Plungar Village Hall to assess all the children present at the camp.

“This is a complex and sensitive investigation and we will continue to provide updates to both parents and guardians and the public as soon as possible,” said Chief Inspector Neil Holden.
