(Adnkronos) – “I have informed the president that I want to resign from my position as prime minister”. This was communicated by the Prime Minister of Lithuania, Gintautas Paluckas, leader of the center-left Social Democrats. The resignation comes following some corruption scandals linked to his companies on alleged irregularities in agreements and financing. Paluckas also declared in a note his resignation from the Lithuanian Social Democratic Party (Lsdp).
“I continue to defend my honor and dignity. We must wait for the end of the investigations which, I am sure, will allow us to distinguish the facts from everything else”, declared the resigning prime minister. His resignation comes a few hours after some searches by the Financial Crimes Investigation Service at the offices of Dankora, a company owned by his brother’s wife. Paluckas, in office since 2024, had already been convicted of abuse of power while working at the Vilnius municipality, a crime for which he had been sentenced to pay a fine.
