Iran: extreme heat in a country without water, over 50 degrees in the southwest

(Adnkronos) – Water emergency and heat waves in Iran. In the southwestern city of Omidiyeh, in Khuzestan, the mercury column reached 51 degrees, Iranian TV reported. In other cities of the Islamic Republic, temperatures have exceeded 45 degrees. In the coming days, the broadcaster reported, citing the weather service alert, sandstorms and poor air quality are expected in areas of Iran. A situation that is exacerbating the water emergency, with experts believing that most (80%) of the water basins are almost dry. 

In various cities, the authorities have imposed a stop to the water supply. The emergency is also being felt in Tehran. And in Khuzestan, rich in oil and one of the hottest inhabited places on the planet, there are increasingly frequent interruptions in the power supply, in addition to the water problem. According to experts, the effects of climate change are hitting the country faster and harder than other areas of the world.
