(Adnkronos) – Greek riot police today intervened by firing tear gas to disperse demonstrators who were protesting, chanting slogans “Freedom for Gaza” and “stop the genocide”, against the arrival in the port of Agios Nikolaos, Crete, of an Israeli cruise ship.
The police intervention allowed tourists to disembark from the ship and board buses for an excursion on the island. There were bottles thrown at the vehicles and the police arrested three people. It is the third time that the cruise ship Crown Iris, operated by the Israeli company Mano Maritime, has been met with demonstrations and protests against the war in Gaza in ports of Greek islands. Last week in Syros, the ship was unable to disembark its passengers due to the protests.
Since then, the Greek authorities have strengthened security and yesterday in the port of Rhodes, several people participating in a similar protest were arrested for alleged violation of anti-racist laws and violence against the police.
