(Adnkronos) – The death toll from the rains and floods that have particularly affected the Beijing region and around the Chinese capital has risen to at least 34, while about 80,000 people have been evacuated. According to Cctv television, 28 deaths were recorded in the northeastern district of Miyun, the hardest hit by the heavy rains, two other victims were recorded in the northwestern district of Yanqing, while four in Hebei province.
The most critical situation remains in the Miyun district, where about 17,000 people have been evacuated and where the water level of a major reservoir has reached its highest point since its construction in 1959. Authorities have initiated controlled discharges and warned residents of the possibility of further flooding.
The wave of bad weather with exceptional rains and consequent floods hit the Beijing region over the weekend, also leading to the closure of tourist sites and the suspension of rail and bus services. The national weather service has warned that rains will continue in northern and eastern China for the next few days.
