Indonesia: all Mount Rinjani routes closed, safety assessments

23 Luglio 2025

(Adnkronos) – The Mount Rinjani National Park Authority in Indonesia, a famous volcano located on the island of Lombok, in the province of West Nusa Tenggara, will temporarily close all hiking trails from 1 to 10 August. This was stated today by a senior official. The director of Mount Rinjani National Park, Yarman, said the closure is intended to allow for the assessment and improvement of safety systems within the park.

“This closure will be in effect for 10 days, from 1 to 10 August 2025,” he said in a statement released in the provincial capital, Mataram. According to Yarman, the closure applies to all six designated climbing routes. Climbers who have already purchased entry tickets for dates between 1 and 10 August, he said, will be able to reschedule their hikes for the remainder of the 2025 climbing season.

“Climbers can also request a refund for entrance tickets and insurance, if they decide to cancel their Gunug Rinjani climbing project,” he added. Several accidents have occurred on the 3,726-meter volcano in recent weeks, one of which, at the end of June, cost the life of a Brazilian hiker, whose body was found at the bottom of a ravine about 600 meters deep.
