(Adnkronos) – The European Union must strive to reach an accord with the United States on tariffs to prevent a trade war that “benefits no one”, Italy’s foreign minister Antonio Tajani said on Wednesday.
“We must work to reach an agreement: a trade war benefits no one,” Tajani said on the sidelines of the Italy-Algeria forum in Rome.
“We will defend our interests. We are in constant contact with (EU trade) commissioner (Maros) Sefcovic,” Tajani continued.
“I hope we can reach a positive agreement,” Tajani added.
The US signalled in recent days that the deadline for a baseline 30% tariff on EU goods from August 1 unless the two sides strike a deal.
Last-ditch talks in a bid reach a deal on tariffs are ongoing and the EU has said it is preparing retaliatory measures against the US if it imposes punitive levies on the 27-member bloc.
