(Adnkronos) – US authorities have announced the opening of humanitarian corridors from the Syrian province of Sweida, in the southwest of the country, due to the “risk of armed conflict” after a week of clashes that have so far caused over 1,100 victims. This was communicated by the US embassy in Damascus, closed since 2012, in a “security alert” published on its website, indicating that the humanitarian corridors will be directed to the Syrian capital and the border crossings with Jordan.
The diplomatic mission stated in the same note that it maintains a level 4 travel advisory due to the “risk of armed conflict and violence” in the Arab country. “The State Department’s guidelines remain the same: if you can leave Syria on your own, do so. US citizens can cross the land border from Syria to Jordan and visas are available upon arrival,” it stated, before pointing out that “airports are open and there are regular flights from Damascus and Aleppo.”
The US embassy also noted that Washington cannot provide any consular or emergency services as it “suspended its operations in 2012”, during the civil war under the presidency of Bashar al-Assad. Therefore, it urged Americans in need to contact the representation of the Czech Republic in the Arab country, as “protector of US interests in Syria”, while warning that its “range of consular services is extremely limited”.
