(Adnkronos) – Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba has announced that he will remain in office, despite the electoral defeat, to face challenges such as the tariffs announced by the Trump Administration which should come into effect on August 1st and the rising prices. After yesterday’s vote, the ruling coalition no longer has a majority in the Upper House of the National Parliament, with three seats less than necessary. Ishiba’s priority, he said in a speech, is to avoid a political vacuum and face the imminent challenges, while stressing that he will take the vote “seriously”.
The Japanese Prime Minister’s party, the Liberal Democratic Party, has ruled Japan almost continuously since 1955. Along with its ally in the ruling coalition, Komeito, it should have won 50 seats to have a majority, but they stopped at 47, according to the broadcaster Nhk.
