Hungary: negotiates new oil pipeline with Russia and Serbia

21 Luglio 2025

(Adnkronos) – Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto announced today that the first steps have already been taken for the construction of a new pipeline that will connect his country to Serbia, at a time, he said, when the European Union is “cutting connections and blocking routes” to hydrocarbons from Russia. “We are proceeding with our Serbian and Russian partners to build a new pipeline between Hungary and Serbia,” he said via social media, criticizing European partners for their position on Russian energy.

Szijjarto defended the need to expand energy routes and sources and warned that “Hungary will not be a victim of these disastrous decisions” taken in Brussels, which, as he explained in another statement, have led to a price increase. “We have to pay much more than elsewhere,” he protested.

For Szijjarto, “Brussels now wants Hungarian household bills to increase two to four times compared to before the renunciation of Russian crude oil and natural gas. We will not allow it; we must not close transport routes, nor isolate Europe from energy sources; we must open new sources,” he said. The pipeline mentioned by the Hungarian Foreign Minister is 180 kilometers long and could be operational in 2027.
