(Adnkronos) – Colombian rescue services managed to rescue 18 miners, trapped for twelve hours due to the collapse of a mine in the northeast of the country. The workers of the El Minón mine, in the rural area of Remedios, are now safe and sound and are undergoing medical examination, reports the Ministry of Mines and Energy.
The first miner emerged around 2 a.m. local time. An hour later, everyone was rescued. The accident occurred around 11 a.m. yesterday morning, after a forklift truck gave way inside a shaft, causing a structural collapse at the main entrance to the gold mine.
“The Ministry of Mines and Energy is pleased to note that all the miners are safe and sound and thanks the rescue agencies, the National Mining Agency, the National Unit for Disaster Risk Management (Ungrd), the mayors of Remedios and Segovia, the Governorate of Antioquia, the Ministries of the Interior, Defense and Health and Aris Mining, as well as the support of the local mining community for this rescue,” the Ministry concluded.
