(Adnkronos) – An eruption is underway in the Sundhnuk volcanic chain in Iceland, for the ninth time since 2023 and the twelfth since 2021. Police officers decided to evacuate the inhabitants of the village of Grindavik after more than 130 seismic tremors were recorded in Svartsengi, on the Reykjavik peninsula. Tourists who were at the Grindavik campsite and those who were at the Blue Lagoon were also evacuated.
Experts from the Icelandic Meteorological Office are traveling to inspect the eruption with a Coast Guard helicopter, Visir reports. At the moment the situation is not considered dangerous. Minney Sigurdardottir of the Icelandic Meteorological Office told Rub that the only problems could arise from a prolonged eruption that could lead lava flows to damage the city of Grindavík.
