(Adnkronos) – A huge gas cloud has sprung from the eruption of the Sundhnukur volcano, on the Reykjanes peninsula in southwest Iceland, and is heading towards the nearby towns of Vogar, Reykjanesaer, Sandgeroi and Garo. Icelandic media report this, explaining that in addition to the fishing village of Grindavik, the authorities are also preparing to evacuate the town of Svartsengis. The Blue Lagoon, resorts and hotels in the area have already been evacuated. No disruptions to air traffic are expected at Keflavik Airport, Iceland’s main airport.
Icelandic geophysicists described the eruption as “not very extensive” despite a two-kilometer fracture having formed. “The event overall doesn’t seem to have been very extensive. There hasn’t been much deformation and it doesn’t look like much magma has been released,” Benedikt Ofeigsson, geophysicist and head of deformation measurements at the Icelandic Meteorological Office, told broadcaster Ruv.
