(Adnkronos) – Italy backs the European Union’s trade chief Maros Sefcovic in his work on tariff negotiations with the United States and is looking “to offer good ideas” which are also in national industries’ interests, foreign minister Antonio Tajani said on Tuesday
“We support Commissioner Sefcovic’s actions and the European Commission’s position, and we also try to offer good ideas,” Tajani said in interview with Italy’s public broadcaster Rai during a visit to Washington.
“Naturally this also means acting in the interests of Italian products and industry, which must not be harmed by a tariff agreement,” he said.
EU officials are scrambling to clinch a tariffs deal with US counterparts before 1 August since US president Donald Trump’s threat to impose 30% tariffs on the bloc if no accord is reached by that date.
