Heavy rains in New York, New Jersey declares state of emergency

(Adnkronos) – Heavy rains and flooding are affecting New York, where basement residents have been warned of the possibility of having to evacuate, while New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy has declared a state of emergency after flash floods occurred. In particular, Western Union County, New Jersey, has been hit by sudden and potentially fatal flooding caused by storms, the National Weather Service office for the New York City region reported. 

“Please stay home and avoid unnecessary travel,” Phil Murphy said in announcing the state of emergency due to heavy rains. There are currently no casualties. 

LaGuardia and Newark-Liberty international airports have reported flight disruptions due to bad weather, and John F. Kennedy Airport has reported possible problems. The three airports have recorded a large number of cancellations, according to the FlightAware tracking site.
