Rhineland-Palatinate, AfD members will not be able to hold positions in the public sector

(Adnkronos) – Members of the German far-right party Alternative for Germany (AfD) will be banned from holding public office in the southwestern state of Rhineland-Palatinate. The regional government announced this today.

All those who apply for positions in the public service will have to declare that they do not belong to an extremist organization and have not been part of one in the last five years, said the Minister of the Interior of the Land, Michael Ebling.

According to a report by the local radio station SWR, the measure will affect civil servants and public sector employees covered by collective agreements, including police officers and teachers.

The authorities will have to refer to a regularly updated list from the intelligence, which lists the extremist groups and organizations for which there are sufficient indications of anti-constitutional activity, Ebling said. “The AfD will therefore also be included in this list,” added the Minister.
