Ukraine, two Chinese citizens arrested, accused of espionage

(Adnkronos) – Two Chinese citizens, father and son, have been arrested in Ukraine. They are accused of espionage, of having tried to smuggle missile technology out of the country. According to Ukrinform news, on June 26, a 24-year-old Chinese man, a former student at the University of Kiev, was indicted for espionage, accused of having “tried to recruit” a Ukrainian who had access to classified documents on the development of armaments for the Ukrainian security forces. The investigations, Ukrinform further reports, concluded that the young man had collected classified documents on Ukrainian Neptune missiles with the intention of transferring them to his father, suspected of being in contact with the Chinese security services and military leaders. 

The young man, the reconstruction continues, was arrested while “attempting to transfer” the collected information. According to Ukrinform, the father lives in China (‘friend’ of Russia which in 2022 launched the full-scale invasion of Ukraine), but often travels to Ukraine and returned to the country on July 7 and the following day was at the Chinese embassy in Kiev. Today he was arrested, it reads. He is accused of having coordinated the reported espionage activities. If convicted, they face up to 15 years in prison.
