Tunisia, opposition leader Ghannouchi sentenced to 14 years in prison

9 Luglio 2025

(Adnkronos) – The leader of the Ennahda opposition party in Tunisia, Rachid Ghannouchi, has been sentenced to 14 years in prison after being found guilty of “conspiracy against state security”. Ghannouchi’s lawyers, who is 84 years old, have rejected the accusations and denounced an unfair trial at the Tunis Court with false testimonies and the impossibility of proving their client’s guilt.

Ghannouchi, the main opponent of Tunisian President Kais Saied, has been in prison since 2023 and today refused to participate remotely in the reading of the sentence. In recent months he has been sentenced to three prison terms, for a total of over 20 years of detention, on various charges including money laundering, illegal financing for Ennahda and apology for terrorism.

The Tap news agency specified that Ghannouchi’s two sons, Mouadh and Tasnim, were also sentenced in absentia to 35 years in prison each.
