Mideast: Italy rejects resettlement of Palestinians from Gaza

8 Luglio 2025

(Adnkronos) – Italy on Tuesday reaffirmed its support for a plan that Egypt unveiled earlier this year to rebuild Gaza as US president Donald Trump and Israeli premier Benjamin Netanyahu repeated their controversial proposal to relocate thousands of Palestinians from the coastal strip.

“We identify with the proposal from Egypt and Arab states,” Tajani said on the sidelines of a conference on the Mediterranean at the parliament in Rome.

“I believe the answer is giving the Palestinians a state alongside Israel. Two people and two states is the solution that we back,” said Tajani.

“We don’t believe the Palestinians can be deported from their land,” Tajani underlined.

A 53 billion dollar reconstruction plan that Egypt outlined in March would sideline ruling Islamist Palestinian group Hamas and replace it with an interim government of Palestinian technocrats with input from Arab, Muslim and Western states.

Egypt put forward the plan to counter to Trump’s controversial vision to depopulate Gaza and rebuild it as a ‘Mediterranean Riviera’ run by the US – a project that Netanyahu greeted with enthusiasm.
