(Adnkronos) – Germany could face the hottest day of the year today, with temperatures up to 40 degrees Celsius, according to forecasts from the German Meteorological Service (DWD). Heat alerts have been issued in some areas. Yesterday the highest temperature of the year was recorded: 37.8 degrees Celsius in Kitzingen, Bavaria, according to preliminary measurements, a DWD spokesman said.
Today, temperatures will be between 34 and 38 degrees Celsius in most of the country, and will be even higher in the south. “It is possible that 40 degrees will be reached locally,” the spokesman said. Due to high temperatures, the risk of forest fires also increases. The all-time heat record for Germany was recorded on July 25, 2019, with 41.2 degrees Celsius Toenisvorst and Duisburg-Baerl, both in North Rhine-Westphalia.
In addition to the record heat, the country is preparing to face the first thunderstorms, some of which could be violent. In the afternoon, thunderstorms with gale force winds are expected to become more frequent in the northwest and parts of the north.
