(Adnkronos) – China revokes, at least in part, the ban on imports of fish products from Japan. The People’s Republic had strongly contested two years ago the Tokyo government’s decision to discharge wastewater from the Fukushima plant into the sea, a move that triggered alarms and fears, but also controversy.
Now, according to the China Daily, which reports a decision by China’s General Administration of Customs, Beijing has decided to “conditionally resume” imports of “some fish products” from Japan. But the exception remains for ten of the country’s 47 prefectures, including Fukushima, and provided that the goods are accompanied by “certificates” from the Japanese authorities guaranteeing the products.
All after, as the newspaper writes, the samples collected and examined over time “have not shown alterations”. Before 2023, the BBC recalls, China was the main buyer of fish products from Japan. The decision of the last few hours, writes the Japanese agency Kyodo, “clearly reflects the interest” of the People’s Republic in an “improvement in relations with Tokyo in the midst of the trade war with the United States”.
