(Adnkronos) – In Hong Kong, a former British colony increasingly in China’s orbit, one of the last opposition groups of the pro-democracy front announces its dissolution. The ‘story’ of the League of Social Democrats ends. “Next year will be the 20th anniversary of the League of Social Democrats – reads a statement relayed by Hong Kong Free Press – However, we will not survive to see that day and we will announce our dissolution”.
A press conference with details is expected on Sunday. The League of Social Democrats was founded in 2006 with the aim of fighting for democratic reforms. Since June 2020, since Beijing imposed a controversial “national security” law on Hong Kong, several activist and civil society groups have ‘disappeared’.
The announcement by the League of Social Democrats comes after the end of the Civic Party’s experience was announced at the beginning of 2024. In February, the Democratic Party announced that it would begin the process of dissolution.
