(Adnkronos) – The minimum wage in Germany will increase from 12.82 euros to 14.60 euros per hour by 2027 in two phases. This was announced today by the commission in charge of proposing the adjustments. At the beginning of next year, the legal base salary paid to employees should first be increased to 13.90 euros, and then increased by another 0.70 euros a year later, the body said in Berlin. Introduced for the first time in 2015 with the centrist government led by former Chancellor Angela Merkel, the minimum wage has been increased 10 times from the initial level of 8.50 euros.
The Minimum Wage Commission, made up of representatives of trade unions and employers, as well as an independent president, votes on adjustments every two years, taking into account wage increases. In the election campaign that preceded the February federal elections, the German Social Democrats, now a junior partner in the new coalition government, had promised to raise the minimum wage to 15 euros.
