(Adnkronos) – A new arms race could precipitate the collapse of the regime of Russian President Vladimir Putin as happened with the USSR in the 1990s. The warning was launched by the Polish Foreign Minister, Radoslaw Sikorski. Vladimir Putin “should understand that he is following in the footsteps of Leonid Brezhnev. He himself spoke about it once, saying that the collapse of the Soviet Union was due to excessive spending on armaments and now he is doing exactly the same thing,” he said in an interview with AFP, DPA and PAP.
“He is waging a very expensive war, he has frightened and provoked the West to push it to increase defense spending…We are doing it because Putin is threatening us,” he added. “This implies that starting from a Texas-sized economy, Putin will have to draw even more funds to allocate to defense. Provided that this produces a similar result for the regime, but more quickly,” he added.
